2024 UHMS Pacific Chapter Town Hall on Clinical Hyperbaric Medicine Enduring Material

Originally hosted August 10, 2024

Schedule:
  • Updates to the 15th Edition of the UHMS Indications Manual - Enoch Huang, MD, Pete Witucki, MD
  • Lessons learned from the Closure of the Legacy Emanuel Hyperbaric Medicine Program - Enoch Huang, MD, Jacquline Hocking, CHT
  • When CMS Gets it Wrong: The Response to OPPS G0277 Payment Error Rate and the Case for Advocacy - John Peters, FACHE, Helen Gelly, MD
  • Limb Preservation Program Cases - Nicki Vedenoja, RN, BSN, Marc Robins, DO, Brenda Freymiller, RN, Luis Cajas-Monson, MD, Yvette Canaba, DPM
  • Hyperbaric Medicine and Compliance with the Standard of Care: Does "Mild" Hyperbaric Medicine Meet the Standard of Care? - R.B. "Gus" Gustavson, MPH, RN, CHRNC, CHT-Admin, CRT, UHMSDSA
  • CMS Data Demonstrates a Cost and Clinical Advantage for Hyperbaric Oxygen - Marc Robins, DO
Lecture Descriptions and Objectives:
  • Discuss the most notable changes in the 15th edition of the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Indications Manual.
  • Provide a timeline of the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center hyperbaric program and a discussion of the events that led to its closure, as well as lessons learned that could affect other facilities.
  • In early November 2023, CMS published the final OPPS rule, which listed a 42% reduction in G0277 (HBO2/30 min segment) in the HOPD environment. This change was inconsistent with the proposal rule published earlier in the year. This lecture will provide an overview of the cause and action the UHMS took with industry partners to reverse the change.
  • Provide an overview of the design of a critical limb preservation program and present various cases.
  • Discuss the somewhat blurred line between mild (light) hyperbaric medicine treatments and clinical evidence based hyperbaric medicine. Risk factors will be discussed with the use of non-approved hyperbaric chambers within the United States and the importance of educating laypersons about the difference and misleading aspects of the social media promotion of mild hyperbaric treatments for off label concerns.
  • Discuss the concept and use of real world data and its impact on medicine today, including the origin, design, and utilization of the Medicare database and answer one of their own pressing concerns about the value hyperbaric treatment may offer in both cost and effectiveness.
